3 Cork Brigade – 1 Southern Division
1 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 1,079 all ranks, and the strength on 1 July 1922 was 403 all ranks. The companies of the 1 Battalion were located as follows: Balinadee, Kilbrittain, Ballinspittle, Timoleague, Barryroe, Clogagh, Bandon, Innishannon, Crosspound, Kilpatrick, Farnivane, Newcestown, and Quarry’s Cross.
2 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 667 all ranks, and the strength on 1 July 1922 was 484 all ranks.The companies of the 2 Battalion were located as follows: Clonakilty, Lyre, Ahiohill, Kilmeen, Ardfield, Ross, Reenascreena, Shannon Vale, Barryroe, Timoleague, Kilkerranmore, Roscarbery, and Ring.
3 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 873 all ranks. By 1 July 1922 this battalion had been reorganised and the revised battalion details for that date are given below. On 11 July 1921 the companies of the 3 Battalion were located as follows: Aultagh, Behagh, Ballinacarriga, Ballineen, Togher, Dernichara / Derrinacahara, Coppeen, Kenneigh, Shanavagh, Clubhouse, Knockbue, Dunmanway, and Kilbarry.
-3 Battalion: Unit strength on 1 July 1922 was 659 all ranks. By 1 July 1922 this battalion had been reorganised. The Ballinacarriga and Ballineen companies had been posted to the 4 Battalion and the Kilbarry company was non existent; the Nedineagh company was not formed until after 11 July 1921; and no data is given in sources for the Coppeen, Kenneigh, and Shanavagh companies. On 1 July 1922 the companies of the reorganised 3 Battalion were located as follows: Aultagh, Togher, Behagh, Clubhouse, Drinagh, Dernichara / Derrinacahara, Dunmanway, Kilbarry, and Nedineagh.
4 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 658 all ranks. By 1 July 1922 this battalion had been reorganised.On 11 July 1921 the companies of the 4 Battalion were located as follows: Skibbereen, Baltimore, Castlehaven, Myross, Glandore, Leap, Corran, Drinagh and Bredagh.
-4 Battalion: Unit strength on 1 July 1922 was 432 all ranks. Prior to the 2nd critical date the Skibbereen, Baltimore, Castlehaven, Myross, Glandore, Leap, and Corran companies had been posted to the 2 Battalion, 5 Cork Brigade and the Bredagh company had been posted to the 3 Battalion, 5 Cork Brigade. There is no data provided in sources re-location of the Drinagh company. By 1 July 1922 the 4th Battalion had been re-formed as follows: the Ahiohill, and Kilmeen companies had been posted in from the 2 Battalion, 3 Brigade and the Ballineen, Kenneigh, Coppeen, Shanavagh, and Ballinacarriga companies had been posted in from the 3 Battalion, 3 Brigade. There is no data provided in sources re-the previous location of the Belrose company. On 1 July 1922 the companies of the 4 Battalion were located as follows: Ballineen, Kenneigh, Coppeen, Shanavagh, Belrose, Ahiohill, Kilmeen and Ballinacarriga.
5 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 1,108 all ranks. By 1 July 1922 this battalion, in the company formation given below, had ceased to exist. On 11 July 1921 the companies of the 5 Battalion were located as follows: Bantry, Coomhola, Droumsullivan, Durrus, Glengarriff, Kealkil, Pearson’s Bridge, Kilcrohane, Inchingeragh, Drimoleague, Caheragh and Durrus Road.
– 5 Battalion: Unit strength on 1 July 1922 was 459 all ranks. On 1 July 1922 the companies of the 5 Battalion were located as follows: Kinsale, Dunderrow, Upton, Mt. Ballinhassig, Ballinhassig, Nohoval and Tracton.
6 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 648 all ranks. By 1 July 1922 this battalion, in the company formation given below, had ceased to exist. By that date the battalion had been re-formed as the 5 Battalion, 5 Brigade, 1 Southern Division.On 11 July 1921 the companies of the 6 Battalion were located as follows: Urhan, Kilcatherine, Ballycrovane, Garnish, Ardgroom, Rossmacowen, Allihies, Eyeries, Castletownbere, Adrigole and Bere Island.
7 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 620 all ranks. By 1 July 1922 this battalion, in the company formation given below, had ceased to exist. By that date the battalion had been re-formed as the 1 Battalion, 5 Brigade, 1 Southern Division. On 11 July 1921 the companies of the 7 Battalion were located as follows: Lisagriffin, Goleen, Dunmanus, Gloun, Lemcon, Schull, Ballydehob, Skehanore, Dunbeacon and Lisheen.
An Active Service Unit: was effective with the 3 Brigade on both critical dates with a total overall strength of 37 all ranks. Personnel were attached to the A.S.U from the battalions of the brigade.
